A New Generation of Slabs

Without the drawbacks of other lightweight construction methods, the Cobiax system combines ease of construction with significant advantages. It allows greater efficiency in the use of concrete, generating considerable savings through the reduction of both vertical and horizontal loads, which translate into major structural economies. That is why I do not hesitate to recommend it strongly.

Principles

The Cobiax CLS system is based on principles of economic and environmental rationalisation that allow the construction of biaxial hollow-core slabs with behaviour similar to a traditional solid slab. The introduction of a void in the zone where concrete contributes little to the overall slab behaviour allows optimisation of slab thickness, improvement of its performance and increased efficiency in resource use.

In a world where the sustainability of natural resources is of growing importance, the use of recycled materials for the voids and the reduction in concrete requirements allow the Cobiax CLS system to inherently promote a structure with lower environmental impact and a significant reduction in CO2 emissions associated with the construction process.

With technological advances, the Cobiax CLS system presents an alternative to conventional systems, revealing its impact on the overall building solution from both a technical and economic perspective.

Characteristics

Characteristics

The Cobiax CLS system comprises modules grouped with ribs that support the upper reinforcement. Manufactured from 100% recycled material, they form the desired voids inside the slab. The volume of concrete eliminated by the modules results in slab weight reductions of between 1.14 kN/m² and 6.49 kN/m².

Note: For each lightweight module installed, a minimum of 2 omega reinforcements Φ8 per void is required, with a height D.

Incorporating a Cobiax CLS slab at design level should follow the procedures and criteria inherent to the definition, calculation and detailing of a solid slab, with the introduction of inertia and shear resistance reduction factors in the lightweight zones and accounting for the load reduction resulting from the elimination of the respective concrete volume.

By considering the Cobiax CLS system from the initial design phase, it is possible to immediately optimise seismic behaviour, vertical elements and foundation loads, increasing structural flexibility and reducing the overall building solution costs.
