Lightweight Concrete and EPS Blocks
EPS blocks for voiding purposes also have their place, as they allow the most varied slab configurations, including the creation of bottom concrete flanges.
Principles and Advantages
Slab voiding with lightweight concrete or polystyrene blocks has long held an important position among voided slab solutions, with Ferca having introduced and patented the lightweight concrete block system in Portugal under the FercaBloco designation. Its use is now widespread and the "Lajes Ferca" designation still remains current today. EPS blocks for voiding purposes also have their place, as they allow the most varied slab configurations, including the creation of bottom concrete flanges.
The FercaBloco system is based on principles of economic rationalisation that allow the execution of one-way or two-way ribbed slabs, commonly referred to as voided flat slabs. This system was designed to reduce the resources used in construction, with significant benefits in terms of concrete and steel consumption.
Characteristics
The wide range of dimensions produced by Ferca, combined with the fact that blocks are manufactured in smaller units, allows them to be combined to achieve the most varied slab configurations. Sets generally form a square in plan and are composed of three units (tripartite set); however, combining a greater number of blocks can create "one-way slabs" where inertia in one direction is prioritised.
The lightweight concrete voiding blocks supplied by Ferca are produced in accordance with the quality management system in place, which defines requirements in terms of raw materials, manufacturing process and finished product quality control.

Ferca Bloco EPS
Expanded polystyrene allows, through its characteristics and manufacturing process, the prescription of any slab configuration, in accordance with the designer's definition to meet the specific requirements of the structural challenge at hand. Common uses of EPS blocks arise from the possibility of placing supports on the blocks, enabling the creation of bottom concrete flanges with clear gains in terms of the section's inertia, as well as in cylindrical voiding in thick slabs or viaduct deck slabs.
